Prayer Requests: Are Delays Really Denials From God?

Delays

Daniel 10:12-13 (NIV)      “Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.  But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.”

Dear Reader,

Jesus taught us the importance of prayer while He walked the earth. In Matthew 6:9-13 we can read what is now called “The Lord’s Prayer.”  It is a wonderful example for all believers on HOW to pray.

When we approach the throne of God, we need to include praise and recognition of God’s position and authority. Then present we can confidently present our requests, including one for forgiveness.  Protection from the evil one should be a daily part of our prayers, as the devil likes to harass and oppress the children of God.  It is always a good idea to pray a hedge of protection around yourself and the ones you love.

In Hebrews and Ephesians we are told that we can approach the throne of God with freedom and confidence.  We are commanded to pray without ceasing.  This means we should be in constant communication with God throughout our day, by intercession for others, ourselves, and by giving God praise and thanks.

James 1:6 tells the believer that when he petitions God through prayer, he needs to do so without doubt.  The prayer offered up in the spirit must be offered with a confidence that God will answer it.  The important thing to remember is that the prayer request may not be answered in the time or way the petitioner imagined.  God hears all prayers and all prayers are answered. He listens to the cries of His children.

Finally, we come to the topic of timing.  First, as I said before, prayers are answered in God’s time.  His timing is perfect and we need to rest in that knowledge.  He has a purpose for every trial, lesson, and joyful experience we face.  Each one of these serves to prod us along, into the fulfillment of His plan.

As His adopted children, Jesus instructed us to be as wise as serpents and as innocent as lambs.  This advice needs to include our awareness of spiritual warfare.  We do not fight a battle of just flesh and blood, but rather one that includes powers and principalities of darkness.

By reading Daniel 10, we learn that Daniel’s prayer was heard by God immediately.  However, there was a delay in the “answer” to his plea.  This time, it was not because of God’s decision to hold off and wait on things.  The angel that finally appears tells Daniel that he had been in a spiritual battle for twenty-one days.  The prince of the Persian kingdom resisted his advancement to help Daniel.  It was not until the angel Michael came to his assistance that the detained angel was able to move forward with his mission to help Daniel.

You need to realize that all prayers are heard by God and answered.  You also need to understand the importance of daily dressing yourself in the Spiritual armor of Christ.  It will help you to resist the enemy.  God sends His legion of angels, or messengers, to fulfill your prayer requests.

Remember, there can be delays to your prayer requests due to God’s perfect timing, will, or because of a spiritual battle. A delay could be for your safety, or it could be that the angel armies are busy fighting on your behalf.

James 1:6 (NIV)     “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)    “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Ephesians 3:12 (NIV)      “In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.”

Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)  “This, then, is how you should pray…

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come,
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

The Unique Ways and Thoughts Of God

Image

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)      “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,”
declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

“By regeneration and sanctification, by faith and prayer, by suffering and discipline, by the Word and the Spirit, the work goes on till the dream of God has been realized in the Christian heart.”      A. W. Toszer

Dear Reader,                                                                                                            The ways of God can often seem illogical to man.  But then, His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.  We dare not presume to understand His plan of action in our lives.  We can rest in knowing that He loves us and has plans to prosper and not to harm us.

Forget about dictating to God your ideas on how to get things done.  He has a plan for your life and has orchestrated a way to get it accomplished.  He does not need your help planning the journey or navigating the course.   He is sovereign, and He has His own way of working all things together for good.  However, what He does ask for is your obedience and trust.

Your Father has the ability to take people’s evil intent and work it out for good, and for His glory.  God’s plans for you cannot be cast aside or dismantled.  Even in the face of overwhelming circumstances, His will and His plans cannot be thwarted.  His purposes will always be accomplished in His perfect timing.

The things that happen to you in this lifetime are all a part of His attempt to transform you into the image of His Son.  Nothing that happens to you is by chance, because God’s purpose is never man’s purpose.  His ways are higher than our ways.

Sometimes, God will take events and intervene to accomplish His purpose.  When God initiates circumstances, it is often to encourage the believer to build a deeper dependence upon Him.  God’s desire for His children is to be dependent upon Him.  Therefore, He wants to care for you.  He wants to put you in situations where you can witness Him do mighty works.  He desires your praise and will provide many opportunities in your life to acknowledge His power and strength.

Genesis 50:20 (NIV)       “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

CONFUSION IS NOT OF THE LORD!!

Image

Dear Reader,

I had a little extra time today, so I am REPOSTING this article on confusion.  I hope it serves to encourage you.

I Corinthians 14:33       “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace… “

There are times in a Christian walk when confusion attacks and leaves a believer frozen in his tracks.  The questions in his mind seem to turn into a demonic cloud of smoke, blinding all vision and understanding.  Thus, progress in his journey comes to a complete stand still.

The Word of God warns us to be wise to the enemy and his schemes.  Matthew 10:16  informs us that we are living among wolves and are to be as shrewd as snakes, while maintaining our innocence.

If you are experiencing confusion in your prayer life it is one of two things.  It could be that satan is harassing you and attacking.  This will often occur when a saint make some kind of progress in taking back ground from the evil one.  Confusion is not of the Lord and so you need to dress yourself in the armor of Christ and sharpen your sword, which is of course the Living Word.

The Bible promises us that if we submit to God and resist the devil, the evil one must flee from our very presence.  We are in a battle down here and we cannot be complacent while on our daily path.

We are soldiers in the army of Christ.  We need to exercise our spiritual muscles and increase our strength by leaning more and more on our Savior’s provisions and grace.  The Holy Spirit is quiet in nature but faithful to pinch us if we are in danger, or in need of instruction.  Trust your discernment and practice it.

There is another reason why you might be confused.  Is it be possible that you are expecting God’s answer to your prayers to be exactly how you expect and want them to be?  Remember, His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.  His ways are so much higher than ours.  So once again, could it be that since the prayers you have offered are seemingly unanswered, you are confused?  Is it that you are not allowing God to answer them in HIS time and in HIS way?  If this is the case you need to ask for the ability to trust and be patient.

The Lord is the MASTER TEACHER and we are His STUDENTS.  When He sees our heads tilted to the side and the “Huh?” in our glance, He will be faithful to reteach His lessons.

Today His lesson was all about how a believer is to identify confusion and deal with it.  Prayer and scripture is always the best way to overcome the schemes of the enemy.  Take heart and do not hesitate to cry out to God when confusion strikes.

JAMES 4:7      “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

MATTHEW 10:16        “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”

1 PETER 5:8     “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

“No one is a firmer believer in the power of prayer than the devil; not that he practices it, but he suffers from it.” Guy H. King

Do You Need A Giggle? A Test Of Obedience.

Silly Me
Mind you, this is EARLY in the morning and I only had 5 hours of sleep……

Job 36:11      ”If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasantness and joy.”

Dear Reader,

Lately it seems like God is sending me a lot of tests. I think He is checking to see if I love Him enough to be a fool for Him. As of late, obedience and trust have been big life lessons. However, today may just be a lesson on submission.

My friends all know that I tend to be pretty serious. However, they also know I have a weird, sometimes even bizarre sense of humor. I was at my nanny job this morning (with 2 lattes down my belt) and my ward was in the BR. I was bored. I decided to play with my iPhone. These pictures were the outcome.

You ask, “Cheryl, what on earth are these crazy photos doing on your blog??” My purpose in sharing these ridiculous photos is to simply make you smile, giggle, and laugh. I will play the fool to make you grin. I have grown in confidence since my early years. If your day starts to sour, think about silly me. Hopefully, the giggle you get from this post will carry you through the day.

ARE YOU WILLING TO BE A FOOL FOR CHRIST? WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO TO HELP ANOTHER PERSON? ARE YOU FEARFUL OF MAN?

God tested Abraham over and over. He tested Noah and Moses. He tests me and He will test you to see if you are faithful, obedient, loving, and able to trust in His provision.

Obey-Greek “hupakou” which means to listen attentively; by implication to head or conform to a command or authority. The word conveys the idea of ACTIVELY following a command. In other words….. there is no choice in the matter. The request is to be done whether you agree with it or not. Obedience is not involuntary.

Submit- Greek “hupeiko” which means to yield; to passively surrender to an authority. Submission is like obedience but in in this case one might question what is being commanded. Submission is voluntary.

Philemon 1:7         “For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.”

Proverbs 29:25 (AKJV)    “The fear of man brings a snare: but whoever puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe.”

Are You Standing On His Promises?

Image

Numbers 23:19 (NIV)      “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?”

The Bible is full of promises written to the children of God, for the purpose of encouragement and instruction.  We know that God is unable to lie.  If He makes a promise, He WILL fulfill it.  We can trust and rely on the promises of our Father.

I have two books full of God’s promises. They remind me of His faithfulness, especially when I am down or weary from the tangles of life.  According to Bibleinfo.com,  there are 3573 promises in the Bible.  Imagine!  God is so kind to us.  He left us so many promises that spur us on and help us to maintain hope.

I encourage you to look a few promises up on the Internet or buy a small book for your personal library.  Let me share just a few with you now.

None of God’s promises ever fail.  Joshua 23:14 (NIV) states: “You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.”

We are promised eternal life (1 John 2:25).  There are rewards for a servant who overcomes adversity and remains faith to Christ.

“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels” (Revelation 3:5, NKJV).

“He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son” (Revelation 21:7, NKJV).

We are promised that God can do the impossible in Luke 18:27. We are also encouraged by 1 John 1:9 when the Word tells us that He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Psalm 103:12 tells us that once we have confessed our sins, He casts them as far as the east is from the west.  Forgotten.

Our Father promises us a Guide, Fruits of the Spirit, strength, shelter from storms, His attention, comfort, peace that transcends all understanding, and wisdom.  In fact, no good thing will He withhold from those who walk along His paths.

Friends, I want to encourage you with the love of God today.  There are so many promises in the Bible.  It will take you a long time to find all 3573 of them, but why not go on a treasure hunt? t Look for a few of His promises today.  Write down the ones that speak to your heart and then memorize them.  By doing this, the Holy Spirit will be able to call them to memory whenever you need to be reminded of that particular promise of God.  Happy hunting.  I hope you are all successful pirates today!  Only, can you please share your treasure with those around you?

Proverbs 2:1-10 (NIV)      My son, if you accept My words
and store up My commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom;
from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just
and protects the way of His faithful ones.

Fear Is A Prison

Image

2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)      “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Dear Reader,

Fear is a trap that leads to prison.  Emotionally, fear can strangle the hope and life out of a person.  It will not hesitate to cripple, wound, and harass a believer.  Fear loves to cast doubt and disturb peace.  It destroys love and paralyzes the children of God.  Fear is a bully.  Fear is the devil in disguise.

1 John 4:18 tells us that there is no fear in love.  God has a perfect love for us and is able to drive out all fear.  Therefore, we must strive to attain that perfect love of God and remember that He is not looking to punish us.  If anything, God loves us so much that He wants to instruct and discipline us with His mercy and grace…. Not punish.

If you are facing a struggle that intimidates or causes you fear, take comfort in Joshua 1:9.  In this verse you are COMMANDED to be courageous.  In addition, you are instructed to not be afraid or discouraged.  There is also a promise in this scripture.  The Lord says He will be with you wherever you go.  That means that God will walk with you through sorrow, pain, change, and journeys into the desert or valley.  He will also walk beside you as you climb to mountaintops.  You need not fear because the most powerful being is right beside you.

There will be times in your walk when you are so passionate for Christ and effective in serving Him that the enemy will notice and balk.  He will then most likely get angry and try to sabotage your ministry.  This is when you need to remember that the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them.

Psalm 91:4-8 reminds us that He will shield you with His wings and that His faithful promises are your armor of protection.   The promises of God are in the bible.  His promises are a part of His living Word.  The Word of God is the Sword with which you need to battle principalities and powers of darkness.

What are some of the PROMISES of God you should memorize and hold claim, especially at times when you are under spiritual attack?

Jeremiah 29:11 promises that He has plans to prosper you with a hope and a future.  Matthew 11:28 promises to give rest to the weary.  Isaiah 40:29 promises to give strength to the weary.  In Philippians 4:19 assures believers that all needs are be supplied.

Fear lives in every heart but it does not have to rule it.  When the cares of this world cause you fear or give you feelings of being overwhelmed, cast them up to your Savior.  Allow Him to shelter you in the shadow of His wings and give you peace and rest.

Father God,

I ask that the chains of fear in this reader be broken by the power of Your blood.  Bind the devil and place a hedge of protection around this one who is overwhelmed and afraid.  May Your mercy be evident today and always.  Amen.

Psalm 34:7 (NIV)     “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them.”

Joshua 1:9 (NLT)      “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

1 John 4:18 (NIV)     “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

Psalm 91:4-8 (NLT)    “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.”

Pearls and Diamonds

Pear In His Hands-Big

Deep in the center of the earth, a diamond is formed. Though many will admire its beauty and usefulness, when its formation is complete, none views the process by which it is formed. It is hidden, unseen, in the darkness.  So is the work of God in the heart of man.’    -Diane Dew

Matthew 13:45-46 (NIV)     Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a Merchant looking for fine pearls. When He found one of great value, He went away and sold everything He had and bought it.

Dear Reader,

You are a treasure belonging to God.  He took great care in your design.  Just as every snowflake, pearl, and diamond is unique, so are you!  However, it takes pressure to turn a lump of coal into a diamond or a grain of sand into a pearl.

Intense pressure causes great suffering and turmoil. The transformation of our spirits, as we are sanctified, must endure pressures just as a grain of sand or diamond in the rough must.  In the end, we will be the spiritual diamond or pearl our Lord desires.  However, before the Lord can press and transform us into the gem He has envisioned, we must lay down our wills and submit to Him.

When you are undergoing the incredible but painful process of transformation, you will often find that the only comfort you can obtain is from the Word of God.  People, even with good intentions, will leave you unfulfilled and empty.  The Word is full of encouragement and hope.  The promises of God are many and should be read during times of weakness and doubt, struggle and hardship.

No soul, pearl, or diamond, will remain in the dark ocean or earth forever.  Something will come along to propel it to the surface.  You will be discovered, admired, loved, and treasured by the ones who find you.  The Almighty God already knows about your beauty.  I am speaking about those around you who finally discover your value as you live out His purpose in your life.

You are the pearl in Matthew 13:45-46.  God is the Merchant.  When finding you, He sees your value and sells everything He has in order to purchase you.  Jesus purchased you with is blood.  You are His treasure.  Think about your value and your cost to God.  With this in mind, can you now endure the sanctification process?

Job 22:21 (NIV)      “Submit to God and be at peace with Him.; in this way prosperity will come to you.”

A Wise Person Knows When To Speak

Way of Wise Small

“A SMART PERSON knows what to say, a WISE PERSON knows whether or not to say it.”   -Unknown

Proverbs 16:21
”The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction.”

Proverbs 12:18 (NIV)      “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Dear Reader,

The book of Proverbs is full of wisdom and the gems within are crying out for you to grab and implant inside of your heart.  The tongue is something that can offer up healing or serve out pain and suffering.  It is the fool who speaks before listening.  In fact, Proverbs 29:20 tells us that a man who speaks in haste has less hope than a fool. Furthermore, Proverbs 21:23 adds that if you guard your mouth and tongue, you will avoid calamity.

When somebody is suffering a loss and feeling grief of some sort, friends and family want to offer comfort through words and actions.  Unfortunately, well meant words can often cause more harm than good.  At moments of tragedy it is sometimes better to be silent.  A kind glance or a compassionate embrace can be more comforting than a well-intentioned but misspoken word.  Remaining silent requires self-control.  Actions of service and love will surely be a comfort to your friend in need.

There are times when you see a believer in sin and you want to rebuke them.  You think, “Proverbs 27:6 says that the wounds of a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”  Do these words give you the freedom to speak a rebuke every time you see sin?  NO!  However, it does give you permission to PRAY.  You might not be the correct person to address the sin issue.  There may be another person appointed by God who needs to share a loving word of concern.  It could be that this is the person who will have an effective influence on the sinner.  If you speak without the leading of the Holy Spirit, you may turn a sinner into a deeper state of rebellion.

Finally, Matthew 12:36 reminds us that on the Day of Judgment, we will have to give an account for every one of our careless spoken words.  This verse alone is enough to give me serious thoughts of taking a vow of silence for the rest of my life.  I know that there have been many senseless, useless, and careless words that have sprung forth from my tongue over the years.  I can’t take them back but I can certainly confess them to God and strive to be more careful with my words.

Try to recall a time when you were full of sorrow and a well-intentioned but misspoken word was sent your way, causing you even deeper pain and agony.  What could the person have done instead to help along your healing?  Is this a possible life lesson for you?  Could it be that you have also unintentionally wounded a person in pain with reckless words, speaking before considering their impact?

Overall, I believe that people are too quick to speak their minds, judge actions, and give advise.  I encourage you to practice listening more and speaking less.  Let your words be few and as a result you will find that when you DO speak, many will be listening with their undivided attention.

Proverbs 21:23 (NIV)   “He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.”

Proverbs 29:20 (NIV)   “Do you see someone who speaks in haste?
There is more hope for a fool than for them.”

Proverbs 16:24 (ESV)   “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

Matthew 12:36 (ESV)    “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak.”

The Potter and His Clay

Image

Jeremiah 18:1-6 (NIV)       “This is the Word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

Then the Word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand, Israel.

Dear Reader

God creates beautiful things.  We are a wondrous creation as we are made in the very image of Christ.  Sadly, many of us look at our refection in the mirror and are horrified when we see who is looking back.

The Word of God tells us that He knew us in our mother’s womb.  God knit us together and our frame was not hidden from Him.  He imagined, formed, molded, and uniquely designed each one of us.  We are the masterpieces of the one and only living God.

So why would God, our Potter, need to reshape us?   Psalm 139 says that all of us are fearfully and wonderfully made. The answer is sin.  Sin mars us and rebellion deforms us.

Thankfully, God loves His creation so much that He will not give up on us.  He will never throw away the clay resting between His hands.  Rather, His hands will reshape our very being time and time again, in order to remove our sin and rid us of our imperfections.

He may have to remold some of us several times until WE get things right, and He is satisfied with His workmanship.  He does not like blemishes and will remove them in any way He sees fit.  It is not the creations place to question its Creator.  The number of times the Potter must reshape us will depend on our willingness to accept His will and the path He has laid before us.

Remember that when God looks at you, He sees you as you WILL BE.  He knows of your sins and that is why He is taking time to refashion you into something beautiful and useful. He is always looking through Spiritual glasses.

If God has asked you to do something or is leading you into a certain ministry, check your attitude.  Has He asked you to travel down a path full of danger or grief?  If so, the hardships you experience will only be temporary and they really are serving a purpose.

With that said, it is with a thankful heart that you should accept and receive His encouragement and leading.  Don’t turn a deaf ear to His voice. If you are hesitating and ignoring the prompts of the Holy Spirit, watch out!  Be prepared for the Potter’s hands and another attempt to reshape you.  God’s purpose will always prevail.

Take comfort in this:  Not only is God your “Potter,” He is also your Father.  And as a Father cares for His child, so He cares for you. Patiently, He will stay by your side and work out your imperfections and blemishes.

Clay cannot mold itself.  It takes the vision and the hands of one far greater to make something of it.  With this said, clay must submit to the will of the Potter.  After submission is offered up as an acceptable sacrifice, trust must follow.  Yes, you must trust that He is faithful to finish the work that He has begun in you, and that He makes all things beautiful in His time. Trust Him.  He is faithful.

Romans 9:20-21 (NIV)      “But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, ‘Why did You make me like this?’  “Does not the Potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?”

Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV)      “ For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.  My frame was not hidden from You
when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.  Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.”

A PRAYER FOR GRACE

1 Cor 1:3 (NIV) “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Dear Reader,
We all need the glorious grace of our Creator. I offer up this prayer on your behalf. I pray that it encourages and comforts you. Your friend, Cheryl

Father God,
I lift up the soul who is suffering right now. The struggle in* her/his life has worn her out. The devil is attacking her walk by throwing his fiery darts of deceit her way. Please dress her in the armor of Your Son Jesus Christ. Bind all confusion and help her to read Your Word. Teach her to effectively utilize the Shield of Faith and the Spiritual Sword of your Truth. You tell us that Your grace is sufficient. Please send Your grace to her and strengthen her so that she can get through this day and on to the next one tomorrow.
Amen.

*Her/Him

Grace is derived from the Greek word charis. In secular Greek, charis was related to chairo, “to rejoice.” It denoted “sweetness” or “attractiveness.” It came to signify “favor” and “lovingkindness.”

In the New testament, “grace”(156 times) takes on a sense of redemption in which God makes His favor available to sinners who do not deserve it.

Psalm 84:11 (NIV) “For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does He withhold
from those whose walk is blameless.”
